The decision to add a dog into one’s life is one big leap towards enjoying the lifetime friendship and loyalty of man’s best friend. However, this decision does not come without responsibilities. A dog comes bundled with wants and needs, and the “leader of the pack” must be able to recognize this responsibility and be ready to assume it.

Too often, people who are on the lookout for a canine addition to the family is often waylaid and sidetracked by a dog’s attractiveness as a puppy. This is a very much common mistake and all too often when the reality of the responsibility sets in, one would often be at a loss on what to do. It is for this reason that one should be aware of the various important considerations when choosing the best dog breed.

One of the most important considerations that one should think about is the presence of small children. Certain breeds of dogs are wonderful to have around small children but some don’t have the patience and tolerance to deal with small children.

The adult size of a dog should also be researched for even though how cute and cuddly a puppy is, large dog breeds such as the Bernese Mountain Dog, Bullmastiff and the Saint Bernard can grow into giant dogs and one might end up with a hundred-pound canine on the premises.

Households with people who have allergies to dog hairs and dander should know which dog breeds are hypoallergenic. A dog’s grooming needs must also be taken into consideration for it may require time, effort and money if you have to bring it regularly to the groomers.

A dog will demand time for exercise as well as physical and intellectual stimulation. The Border Collie and the Australian Sheepdog requires more exercise or they can become bored and develop negative behavior.

Getting a dog is certainly one big decision and should not be taken for granted.
