The bond that binds both man and dogs has always been the subject of countless studies and inquiries but no one can ever fathom what makes it so strong and unbreakable. The phrase “man’s best friend” has come to mean so much—from a hunting buddy to a farm herder, from seeing eye dogs to guard dogs. Now the medical field has also recognized the indispensable role of dogs in therapy.

Certain breeds of dogs have been used in many nursing homes and hospitals that provide long term care facilities for many patients. The dog’s positive influence on the patients have been noticed by many scientists and hospital staff, so much so that many long term care facilities receive regular visits from dogs which have been trained to work within the stifling confines of hospitals and nursing homes.

Many studies have shown that persons with dogs have lower blood pressure levels, fewer feelings of loneliness and depression, and have higher self esteem. Dogs have been known to create a calming effect on people which can greatly influence a person’s outlook on life.

A dog’s visit to a health care facility is often a much anticipated break from ordinary hospital routine. The visit is beneficial not only to the patients but also the hospital and medical staff. A dog brings a different type of atmosphere and brightness into the facility. It banishes the loneliness and is a diversion of an otherwise boring existence of a life within the restrictive confines of a hospital ward.

Some of the most commonly dog breeds used as therapy dogs include the very friendly Golden Retriever, Pomeranian, and Labrador Retrievers.
