Description: When abdominal contents protrude through the abdominal wall, a hernia is formed. This congenital condition is manifested by the presence of a soft mass on the umbilicus. If left unchecked, the intestines in the hernia can become pinched or restricted hampering the digestive process. Blood flow will also be restricted when blood vessels are pinched within the area. When the digestive process is hampered, the animal will experience vomiting and may refuse to eat or drink. When there are restrictions in the circulation, there may be swelling within the area which is often painful and can pave the way for more serious and fatal complications. Treatment involves surgery to close the opening through which the abdominal contents have been protruding.
