Description: Some breeds of dogs possess brains bigger than can be normally accommodated by the brain. This condition results in the protrusion of some parts of the cerebellum through the bottom parts of the skull blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. When this happens, fluid-filled cysts (known as syrinx) often form along the spinal cord causing damage to the area. A dog with Syringomyelia suffers from pain around the head and neck area. It may also be observed scratching at the neck area. When not treated, the dog may experience eating and walking difficulties and eventually paralysis. An MRI can help diagnose the disease. Medications such as corticosteroids and anticonvulsants only serve to alleviate the signs. Expensive surgery is often indicated to correct the growth.
