In order for the heart to overcome this blockage and efficiently pump blood throughout the body, it has to work twice as hard. A thorough examination by your veterinarian will enable detection of heart murmurs. In mild cases, the affected dog can continue to live a normal life however in severe cases the dog may manifest limb weakness, fainting, breathing difficulties and may suffer from accumulation of fluid in the lungs, and eventually death. An electrocardiogram will also help diagnose the condition. A prophylactic dose of antibiotics including other supportive medications can alleviate the symptoms. Expensive surgery is often indicated in serious cases. Breeds Commonly Affected: Bernese Mountain Dog, Bouvier des Flandres, Boxer, Bull Terrier, Bullmastiff, Newfoundland, Rottweiler ![]() ![]() |
