Description: A common skin problem manifested by two opporiste manifestations—oily and dry skin. Many causes have been recognized and include atopy, scabies, flea allergies, and pyoderma. Symptoms include either greasy hair or excessive scaling of the skin. In both cases, the dog has a distinctive odor. A thorough physical examination will help make a diagnosis. Regular grooming and bathing with medicated shampoos will help prevent the occurrence of bacterial infections. If there is an infection, medications may be needed.
