Being the largest part of the kidney the renal cortex functions in the removal of toxins and waste products from the body. If the kidney fails to perform this function, substantial amounts of toxins and waste products remain in the body resulting to lethargy, increased thirst and urination. An ultrasound coupled with a radiographic test and urinalysis can help diagnose the condition in dogs. Since it is a congenital defect, this fatal disease condition does not have any successful cure. Supportive treatment can be given to make the dog comfortable and prolong its life. This includes providing plenty of fresh clean water and engaging in regular exercise. Positive animals should never be used for breeding. Breeds Commonly Affected: Akita, Bedlington Terrier, Chow Chow, Keeshond, Lhasa Apso ![]() ![]() |
