Description: A congenital condition that occurs when there is a shortage of the enzyme, Pyruvate Kinase, which is essential in maintaining the integrity of red blood cells. Without PK, red blood cels are easily broken down thus causing anemia. Affected dogs often show typical signs before reaching a year old. They often suffer from abnormal bone density that often predisposes liver disease or bone marrow failure. Weakness and poor exercise tolerance are common manifestations of the anemic condition caused by Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency. There is no successful treatment for this disease. Since it is congenital, dogs suffering from this condition should never be used for breeding.
