Description: When the kidney fails to function at an optimum level, its ability to filter the blood is often affected and there is consequent loss of substantial amounts of protein. On the other hand a poor filtering mechanism is unable to remove albumin from the blood resulting in high levels of blood albumin. Dogs with PLN suffer from extreme thirst and excessive urination. The protein loss often leads to muscle wasting and weight loss. The high levels of albumin in the blood often cause blood clots and skin problems. Urinalysis will demonstrate high levels of protein. The line of treatment involves changing the diet to a gluten-free one and supportive medications.
