When this happens, blood bypasses the liver thus the toxins and impurities are still present in the blood leading to the manifestation of neurological signs. There are also some cases when the Liver Shunt is created as a consequence to other abnormal conditions of the liver. Affected dogs may experience seizures, general malaise and lethargy. Its growth may be stunted. There is also an increased possibility of the formation of bladder stones. Diagnosis is made based on the results of a radiograph or an ultrasound of the liver. An Ammonia Tolerance Test will also help in the diagnosis. Surgery is indicated to correct the shunt however the dog should be healthy and stable before surgery. Breeds Commonly Affected: Cairn Terrier, Havanese, Italian Greyhound, Japanese Chin (Spaniel), Maltese, Shih Tzu, Tibetan Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier ![]() ![]() |
