A Persistent Right Aortic Arch is a prenatal blood vessel present near the base of the esophagus that fails to disappear naturally and causes a narrowing of the esophagus near the base of the heart. The narrowing of the diameter of the esophagus interferes in the passage of food from the esophagus to the stomach. Dogs suffering from the condition are observed to regurgitate food, experience breathing difficulties, and stunted growth due to the blockage between the esophagus and stomach resulting in reduced nutrients for the body. A Persistent Right Aortic Arch requires surgical intervention early in life before permanent damage can occur. Breeds Commonly Affected: Vizsla, Weimaraner ![]() ![]() |
