These lesions are called Peri-anal fistulas and are believed to occur as a result of the inflammation of the sweat glands around the anus. Inflammation is due to invasion of sweat glands by bacterial pathogens. Dogs with lesions often lick and bite the affected area. They will drag their backend on the floor. In severe cases, there may be pain, bloody stools, diarrhea and lesions which are visibly red. A physical examination of the anal area and biopsy will confirm the diagnosis. Mild cases can be treated with thorough cleaning of the area with antiseptic solution. A topical antibacterial ointment should also be applied.
