Trauma is an important cause of Patellar Luxation however many congenital cases have also been observed. Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to the condition and most often are consequences of genetic predisposition. Lameness is the most common sign in dogs with a luxating patella. If undetected for a considerable amount of time, the bones can slowly wear down causing more pain and possibly, arthritis. Surgery is the only option to correct Patellar Luxation. The procedure involves restructuring and modification of the grove to provide better traction for the kneecap.
