Description: An aggressive form of cancer affecting the bones. It is prevalent in large breeds of dogs. The progressive growth of the tumor causes bone destruction until the tumor has invaded the surrounding area. A bone affected with osteosarcoma is very brittle compared to a healthy bone. Dogs with Osteosarcoma exhibit lameness, pain, and swelling. The abnormal tumor growth can be spotted on x-ray results where the bone has been damaged. A biopsy may be required by your veterinarian. Being an aggressive form of cancer, most veterinarians recommend surgical amputation of the affected area.
