Description: A hereditary condition characterized by the failure of the bony plates of the skull to fully close during development leaving a soft spot on the top of the skull. The hole where the bony plates did not meet will leave the brain vulnerable to insult leading to brain damage. There is no successful treatment indicated to correct the open fontanel. Since it is a genetic condition, affected dogs should never be bred and owners should exercise precautions to avoid injury to the area.
