![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Necrotic MyelopathyDescription: A rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the gradual destruction of the central nervous system by the body’s own antibodies. Damage involves the progressive breakdown of the muscle tissues around the spinal cord. This degenerative abnormality often leads to mobility and sensation problems, and eventually paralysis. A dog suffering from Necrotic Myelopathy experiences sudden muscle weakness and instability. It may also drag its legs when walking and at times may refuse to stand up. Since the symptoms are non-specific, your veterinarian needs to conduct extensive diagnostic tests to make a correct diagnosis. Some of these tests include neurological examinations, x-rays of the spine. The cerebrospinal fluid may also be subject to several tests. There is no satisfactory treatment for this fatal condition and treatment is only undertaken to alleviate pain while slowing down the destructive process thereby prolonging the dog’s life.
