The disease is caused by the protein “Dystrophin” which is very important in the stabilizing the muscles. Muscular Dystrophy can be inherited and affected dogs often show signs as early as 2 months old. Clinical signs include swelling of the tongue, swallowing difficulties, excessive drooling, neck spasms, and eating difficulties. Medications can be prescribed by your veterinarian however they are only used to slow down the progression of the disease. There is no successful treatment for muscular dystrophy.
