Description: The narrowing of the Mitral Valve opening. This condition results in a small passageway for the blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle leading to reduced blood flow within the body. A dog with Mitral Stenosis can have breathing problems and suffer from frequent heavy coughing. Diagnosis is made with blood tests, an echocardiogram, an electrocardiograph, and an angiogram. Treatment involves low sodium intake and diuretics. There are cases which often indicate the surgical replacement of the Mitral Valve, however this procedure is extremely risky and costly.
