![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Leg FracturesDescription: The occurrence of breaks or cracks in the bones of the leg and usually caused by stress, trauma on impact, or weak bones. Limping is the first sign that can be observed in a dog with a fractured leg bone. Upon close examination, the leg or joint may appear misshapen accompanied by swelling and pain. If the fracture is caused by trauma, bleeding may be present. Most dogs are wary about anyone touching the area near the fracture for fear of pain. X-rays will give you and your veterinarian a good idea as to the degree of severity of the bone fracture. If you suspect your dog of having a broken bone, it should be treated as an emergency and your dog should be taken to your veterinarian immediately. Leg fractures may have to be corrected with surgery and/or pins. The affected bone will usually be placed in a cast or splint to provide protection for the bone during the healing period.
