![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Kennel CoughDescription: Also known as Infectious Tracheobronchitis, Bordetella, and Bordetellosis, it is a term used to denote an upper respiratory tract infection in dogs. Many infectious agents have been known to contribute to the occurence of Kennel Cough including Mycoplasma spp, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Parainfluenza virus. However, most cases of Kennel Cough have been pointed to Bordetella bronchiseptica, a bacteria which can be isolated from dogs infected from Tracheobronchitis. The course of the disease will stretch for approximately 10 days however the convalescing dog will continue to shed the bacteria for almost 2 weeks. A dry hacking cough is the most common sign of Kennel Cough. Retching usually follows the cough and there may be a watery discharge from the nose. Severe cases may also have fever, anorexia, pneumonia and even death. Most deaths occur in unvaccinated puppies and immunocompromised dogs.
