Description: A degenerative disease of the cartilaginous disks that support the vertebra. There are many causes which have been identified and include hormonal, genetic, mechanical, or autoimmune factors. Symptoms will depend upon the severity of the condition. Mild cases may only show neck and back pain while more severe manifestations include loss or bladder control and paralysis. Diagnosis is based on the results of a radiograph of the spine. Depending on the clinical symptoms shown by your dog, your veterinarian may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications, pain relievers, and in some cases surgery may be indicated.
