Description: A condition characterized by abnormally low levels of glucose in the blood. Recognized predisposing factors include excessive insulin injection to dogs receiving treatment for Diabetes mellitus, presence of bacteria, ingestion of Xylitol, or stress. Hypoglycemic dogs are often drowsy and depressed. If undetected, the dog may experience muscle weakness and tremors, seizures, and disorientation. A blood test to determine blood sugar levels can be done to confirm diagnosis of Hypoglycemia. The line of treatment is aimed at reversing the blood glucose levels. Clinical studies have also demonstrated that dividing the daily food ration into several meals throughout the day can help prevent Hypoglycemia.
