The increased levels of cerebrospinal fluid exert pressure on the brain and may lead to brain damage or interfere with proper brain development. Hydrocephalus usually arises as a result of brain tumors or trauma to the head. Dogs with Hydrocephalus suffer from seizures, mental dullness, and poor vision. In some cases, the dog may have a palpable soft spot on its head, the open fontanel. The condition usually occurs in brachycephalic and toy breed dogs. Radiographic examination with MRI or CT scan can help diagnose Hydrocephalus. Treatment includes draining the excess fluid and symptomatic treatment. Unless the underlying cause is recognized, there is no successful cure for this condition. Breeds Commonly Affected: Chihuahua, Maltese ![]() ![]() |
