The fungus abounds in nitrogen-rich soil and it can enter the body through inhalation of the spores. Symptoms observed in infected animals show both respiratory and intestinal involvement. Young puppies and dogs with compromised immune systems often show severe forms of the disease that can include the gastrointestinal tract, spleen, lymph nodes, eyes, and liver. A diagnosis is made based on the history, symptoms, radiographic tests on the abdomen and chest, and demonstrating the fungus in the tissues. Histoplasmosis can easily be treated by an oral administration of an antifungal drug such as itraconazole and ketoconazole.
