Some dogs with Hemivertebra have corkscrew tails or tails growing backwards. This often creates a gap in the spine that can easily be infected. Affected dogs often show weakness of the rear limbs. Fecal and urinary incontinence may also be present. Surgery to amputate the tail is usually indicated. However severe cases may warrant spinal surgery. Symptomatic treatment is also given.
