![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() EctropionDescription: A condition characterized by drooping of the eyelid margins and the turning outwards of the lower eyelids. It may affect one or both eyes and is actually inherited in certain breeds. Since the lower lid is sagging, the conjunctiva is exposed. This forms a pouch where pollens, dust, dirt may accumulate resulting in the irritation of the conjunctiva. Watery eyes and redness of the conjunctiva are common signs. Although some dogs are not bothered with the entropion, there may be some that often develop recurring eye infections and secondary bacterial infections of the eye. Medical attention is advised especially when eye irritations develop. Eye drops can alleviate irritations and antibacterial ophthalmic ointments may also be prescribed depending on the condition of the eyes. Surgery may be indicated in severe cases to remove excess tissue thereby tightening the eye lids and removing the pouch. Breeds Commonly Affected: Basset Hound, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound, Bulldog, Clumber Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer, Newfoundland, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Spinone Italiano, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon ![]() ![]() |
