![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() DistichiasisDescription: Distichiasis is a condition characterized by the growth of extra eyelashes from the glands of the lower or upper eyelid. The hair’s growth follows the duct of the gland until it reaches the duct’s opening on the eyelid. These extra eyelashes often rub on the cornea leading to irritation and tearing that often results to corneal abrasions. It is considered to be a hereditary condition prevalent in purebred dogs. Visual inspection of the eye and finding extra eyelashes emerging from the meibomian gland will help confirm Distichiasis. There are dogs which are very tolerant to the disease and do not require any treatment at all. However, there may be dogs requiring ophthalmic ointments to protect the cornea and coat the eyelashes in an oily film. Lubricants are often recommended for dogs with mild tearing. In cases where the dog is visibly affected and bothered by the extra eyelashes, surgical removal is recommended. Breeds Commonly Affected: Australian Shepherd, Beagle, Bedlington Terrier, Brussels Griffon (Brabancon), Bulldog, Chow Chow, Curly-Coated Retriever, French Bulldog, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Lakeland Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Miniature Poodle, Pekingese, Portuguese Water Dog, Saint Bernard, Schipperke, Shiba Inu, Smooth Fox Terrier, Standard Poodle, Tibetan Terrier, Weimaraner, Wire Fox Terrier ![]() ![]() |
