![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Diabetes MellitusDescription: A defect which may be attributed to the inability of the pancreas to produce sufficient levels of the insulin hormone (Type 1) or the failure of the body cells to utilize insulin. Dogs diagnosed to be suffering from Diabetes Mellitus have abnormally high blood sugar levels. There are two types of the disease—Type 1 (also known as juvenile diabetes) and Type 2 (adult-onset diabetes). Type 1 requires that your dog be given insulin shots and regular monitoring of its blood sugar levels. On the other hand, Type 2 is non-insulin dependent. If the condition is left untreated, it may result to organ failure, hormone disturbances, urinary tract infections, and rapid weight loss. Regular exercise can also do wonders for a dog diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus. Breeds Commonly Affected: Flat-Coated Retriever, American Eskimo, Saint Bernard, Silky Terrier, Australian Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Samoyed, Dachshund ![]() ![]() |
