![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Demodicosis (Demodex or Red Mange)Description: A common skin condition caused by the Demodex mites which are normal inhabitants of a dog’s skin. However, dogs diagnosed with Demodicosis had been observed to have an abnormally high number of Demodex mites. Signs may be localized or generalized depending on the dog’s immune status. Lesions include scaling, reddening of the skin, hyperpigmentation, and alopecia (hair loss). If left untreated, it will lead to the appearance of severe crusting and generalized hair loss. There may be secondary bacterial infections. Your veterinarian will get skin scrapings which are examined under a microscope to demonstrate the presence of Demodex mites. Treatment will include topical lotions and antibacterial soaps.
