Neurologic deafness is caused by abnormalities affecting the inner ear, auditory nerve or the part of the brain responsible for auditory sense. On the other hand, conduction deafness may be attributed to abnormalities present in the outer ear, the eardrum, and in the middle ear. The accumulation of waxy debris in the ear canal and severe ear infections can also lead to deafness. A dog may suffer from a unilateral (one ear) or bilateral (two ears) deafness. Your veterinarian will need to conduct tests using specialized equipment to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
