Stones are formed as a consequence of the inability of the kidney to efficiently eliminate cystine, an amino acid. The presence of stones in these organs can impede the flow of urine. Cystinuria is prevalent in males and may not become apparent until they are mature. This is a life-threatening condition because failure to urinate can lead to the buildup of toxic substances in the body. Surgery to remove the stones is indicated. Prevention includes giving your dog a methionine-free diet and free access to fresh, clean water. Breeds Commonly Affected: Mastiff and Newfoundland ![]() ![]() |
