This heredity disorder gives rise to lesions on both sides of growing and developing bones including the skull and jaw resulting in irregularly enlarged bones. The disease is often manifested when the dog reaches four to eight months. Clinical signs include swollen jaws, difficulty in opening its mouth, eating difficulties, facial swelling, drooling, pain, and depression. Facial muscles may undergo atrophy. An accurate diagnosis is reached with radiographic examinations, biopsy, and thorough physical examination. There is no effective cure for CMO, however symptomatic treatment can be given to reduce the inflammation with anti-inflammatory medications and eliminate pain and discomfort. Breeds Commonly Affected: Cairn Terrier, Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier ![]() ![]() |
