Unusually large amounts of copper in the body are toxic. It may due to the inefficiency of the liver to metabolize copper or there is an unusually high intake of copper from the diet. Symptoms are generally non-specific and include loss of appetite, vomiting, weight loss, and abdominal pain. The inflamed condition of the liver can lead to the death of the liver cells. Copper Toxicosis is often observed in dogs four years old and older, however it can affect a dog of any age. A DNA test can help in the diagnosis of the disease. Prevention involves checking that the diet contains only the required amounts of copper. Treatment should include changing the diet to include just the right amounts of copper. Your veterinarian may also recommend an anti-cupric medication. Prognosis will depend on how long the disease has been present and the amount of damage it has done on the liver. Breeds Commonly Affected: Bedlington Terrier and West Highland White Terrier ![]() ![]() |
