The tear gland is exposed looking like a red cherry in the corner of the eye. The exact cause of the condition is unknown however, it is several schools of thought believe that the weakening of the connective tissue around the eye area may be a factor in the prolapsed of the third eyelid. Dogs with Cherry Eye often find it bothersome, thus, they will tend to scratch or rub on the eye area that can lead to ulcers and injury. Treatment is directed to returning the tear gland to its proper anatomical position. Supportive therapy is administered in the form of steroids and antibiotics.
