![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy (CPRA)Description: A hereditary disease of dogs where there is the degeneration of the retinal cells of the eye leading to loss of vision. Dogs affected with CPRA are often observed to start bumping into fixed objects. It may also suffer from night blindness and will hesitate to go out at night. After a year or so, the condition may progress leading to irreversible complete blindness. Two types of CPRA have been identified—early onset and the later onset. The early onset type starts a few weeks after birth while the late onset type starts after the dog is more than a year old. A correct diagnosis is based on a retinoscopic exam and electroretinogram.
