![]() ![]() Dog Health Concerns![]() ![]() Addison ’s diseaseDescription:When the adrenal cortex is unable to provide the required amounts of steroid hormones needed by the body, Addison’s Disease or Hypoadrenocorticism develops. Diagnosis based on the physical manifestations of the disease is often difficult because the signs are non-specific and highly generic. The dog may exhibit lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness and anorexia. A definitive diagnosis can be made with blood tests. However, because of the difficulty in detecting the onset of the disease, most dogs become extremely ill before it is brought to the attention of a Veterinarian. Treatment is often targeted to correct dehydration with fluid and electrolyte replacement. A hormonal replacement is often given to supply adequately the hormonal needs of the body. Breeds Commonly Affected: Some of the most common breeds of dogs prone to Addison’s Disease include the Bearded Collie, Basset Hound, Great Dane, Standard Poodle, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, Portuguese Water Dog, and the West Highland White Terrier. ![]() ![]() |
